The indexing service runs at a fairly low priority, and as the user you have almost no ability to manage it, determine when/how it runs, etc.
It consists of a service that runs as a background process to index all the files on your system, and an 'explorer' componenet that runs within Acad to search against the index created by the service.
The content explorer is a two-part add-on, installed by default.
